Professor McDaniel: Recall of SF District Attorney a Referendum on Criminal Justice Reform

Monday, October 25, 2021

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- Jason McDaniel, a Political Science professor at San Francisco State University, said the recall’s outcome could reverberate around the country as the former public defender is often held up as one of the faces of the progressive-prosecutor movement.

McDaniel said that the recall is as much a referendum on criminal justice reform around the country, as it is on Boudin himself.

The recall effort likely will spark “a national conversation about crime, criminal justice and progressive reforms toward criminal justice,” he said. “There might be a lot of voters out there who want to hear a serious conversation about that and could be persuaded.”
