His poetry has received four Pushcart Prize nominations, and he has received fellowships and residencies from Cave Canem, Kundiman, the Provincetown Fine Arts Work Center, Vermont Studio Center, Yaddo, Anderson Center for the Arts, Squaw Valley Community of Writers and Djerassi Resident Artists Program. With poets Dawn Lundy Martin and Duriel E. Harris, Wilson co-founded the performance-based Black Took Collective.

The Creative Writing Department opens its Writers on Writing course to the public every Monday evening of the semester. Taught by Professor Robert Glück, the course features faculty and visiting writers reading from their works and discussing their creative process.
