Professor Tuman: Democratic Convention Sans Live Crowd Creates New Challenges

Wednesday, August 19, 2020

SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE -- With the Real Clear Politics polling average showing Biden holding a nearly eight-point lead over Trump nationally, the Democrats don’t need their convention to be a political home run, said Joe Tuman, a political communications professor at San Francisco State University.

For Democrats, “the key is to not screw it up,” he said. “Don’t lose ground.”

The sales job won’t be made harder just by the absence of balloon drops and confetti cannons, Tuman said. Speaking only to people watching on television and online is very different from dealing with the enthusiastic atmosphere of a packed arena.
